In June 1970, art critic Pierre Restany published a text about the installation Aqua Alta/Pali/Venezia (1968-1970): 'In terms of communication, Gina Pane’s work is a remarkable achievement of language, a culmination of environment, a masterpiece of applied ecology.' In December of the same year, the observer who noted that 'ecology joins the political' imagined inviting European, American and Japanese artists to conceive intervention projects on Vesuvius. Two years later, the Vesuvian Operation was launched from Naples.
